Frequently Asked Questions

What is Montessori?

Developed more than a century ago, Montessori is an educational philosophy based on the work and observations of Dr. Maria Montessori. It is centered around the principles of independent discovery, hands on learning, and respect for the individual learning pace and interests of each child. The Montessori method serves children birth through adolescense in schools all over the world. The method recognizes that the mind of a child is especially absorbent during the first six years of life. Guided by universal development periods, children acquire spoken and written language, order, a mathematical mind, controlled movement, and refinement of their senses almost effortlesly.

How is a Montessori program different than a mainstream program?

In most schools children are taught educational concepts in a group and expected to all learn at the same pace. In a Montessori school children are given individual lessons and an individual lesson plan is created for them which takes into account their interests and abilities. The special nature of the materials allows the children to work independently until the lesson is mastered. Children can advance very quickly through the different curriulum areas when they are not limited in their learning. A mixed age group ensures that there will be collaboration and the passing on of skills as older children help younger ones spontaneously throughout the day. A three hour period of uninterrupted work allows children to experience long moments of concentration with self chosen work.

Why should I send my child to a Montessori school?

Most psychologists and educators today agree that the single most important period in the devlopment of a person's intelligence occurs between birth and age six. A child's mind is extremely abosrbent and his curiosity is at peak during these early years. When properly nourished and stimulated the child's mind forms patterns for learning that will serve him well throughout his life. The Montessori system of education has proven to be one of the most effective and fastest growing methods of guiding a child during these critical years.

At what age can my child start at the school?

Children typically enter our school in August of the year they have turned three years old. Early applications are highly suggested since we have limited openings each year. Occasionally there are openings for four and five year olds.

Who attends BSMS?

Our school is attended by children of Aruban, Dutch and international backgrounds. We have a diverse community with often as many as 15 countries represented among the children's families.

What do children learn at the school?

The Montessori curriculum s extensiveand well integrated. It includes the subjects of language, mathematics, art, science geography, social studies, music, an area for the senses, food prepration and practical life. Children are presented the lessons individually or in small groups and they advance through the curriculum at their own pace. Because of the benefits of mixed age grouping, they are constantly exposed to more advanced concepts or get to revisit concepts mastered by teaching and helping others.

What happens after a child attends the school?

Children graduating from Montessori programs are often highly independent, motivated, well academically prepared, and socially savvy compared to their peers in mainstream programs. This is due to having had three years in a program that was tailored to foster those skills. Children from our school transition to both Montessori Elementary and mainstream First Grades in both private and public schools.

What is the language of the school?

At Beautiful Sun we offer a bilingual program following the "one face, one languae" approach to learning. That means that one teacher is speaking English exclusively, and the two ther adults are speaking only in Dutch. The classrom is an immersive English experience since that is the language that the marjoirty of the children speak in with to one another. Dutch development is related to the amount of exposure the child has to Dutch language at home.

How are children assessed at school?

Children in Montessori are constantly testing their own skills with the self correnting materials. Once a child has mastered a material and skill they are ready to move on to the next lesson. This progression is observd by the teacher as she presents the next lesson to the child. If she observes a child is having difficulty with a particular material, she may re-present it at another moment or in another way.

How much does the school cost?

Our school is completely parent funded, which acts as a quality control for our program. It depends entirely on the tuitons payed for by families enrolled. The school year costs 9750 AWG which includes the program, materials, meals (lunch and snack), and field trips. Discounts are not granted for absences of any duration. We offer several scholarships every year. Feel fre to inquire about them!

Is Beautiful Sun a religious school?

Our school is nonsectarian and is not affiliated to any religious organization. The school's mission is to celebrate diversity, this is done by observing various cultural activities, holidays and celebrations.

How is transportation arranged at school?

Parents are responsible for bringing and picking up their children at school each day. However, organized carpools and a parent organized bus service to the Noord area are available.

"There are many reasons I find myself very grateful to the school but the most outstanding one is the confidence that my child has developed in herself. It's not easy to describe in words, but really magical to see it in real life. This confidence has enabled her to step out from the cozy world of Beautiful Sun into First Grade seamlessly. "

"Sending our child to Beautiful Sun Montessori School, being part of the community, working with the staff to help our son develop and grow... It has been a wonderful and amazing adventure.

We were inspired to be better parents!"

Jacob and Luzina de Greef

"School should be a place where children are disciplined with love, taught with example and nurtured so they are independent, confident and capable. Where the love for learning is fostered and curiosity applauded. In an ideal world this kind of school would be our hope, in Aruba, such a school exisits. My family and I should know. Being a family of three children, we had the good fortune of sending our youngest child to Beautiful Sun Montessori School, (the first graduating class) and it is without a doubt that the skills, moral values and love for learning that were instilled in our child at this very important stage of her growth has truly been the foundation of the student, child and friend she is today. For a parent who is looking for school to be an extension of home, and the harmony between lessons learned to be reinforced in both environments, BSMS provides this safe sanctuary. BSMS and their faculty will always hold a special place in our hearts."

"When enrolled our daughter in the school we were at first not sure of how the Montessori method would work. We read a lot, came to the orientation sessions, and even played with some of the materials, but were not sure what to expect for the coming school year. We told ourselves, this is the the right age to experiment! And with this in mind gave a vote of confidence to a school whose structure we liked, and whose teacher captivated us. We did not know we were about to discover a method of learning where the child is not a passive receiver, but rather the protagonist and director of his own learning. This is a method where the child begins to apply his learning directly into his daily life and his reward is to feel proud of his accomplishments. The school is a place where through interacting with teachers and other children the child learns the importance of respect, to value others, to be considerate, honest, compassionate and perseverant. All these important values are very necessary to cultivate in today's world, and unfortunately we see less and less examples of them around us. The individuality of each child is respected, and the children are not judged or labeled. The children learn to become involved in daily chores actively- sweeping, washing dishes, setting the table for the others, folding their clothes. And yet this independence is not imposed on the children, but simply encouraged by giving the children the tools for them to be confident enough to carry them out successfully. The hourly commute when dropping off and picking up my daughter at Beautiful Sun Montessori School are well worth it when I see her smiling face when I arrive. Knowing she is learning compassion and love for those around her and feeling her enthusiasm for learning is what we call “giving the best to our child”. It is more than what we received as children ourselves, and more than what we imagined we could give as parents.""

"Having experienced Montessori with our older child we were always convinced to continue with it for our younger one. What we experienced at BSMS was phenomenal! Our younger child is a determined, free thinker who wanted to experience everything in life from bicycles to planes and we weren’t very sure how to mould him. He underwent a remarkable change. He is now an self assured thinker who calculates, assess and then reacts. At the same time he isn’t scared to try and experiment.
We love the confidence and wonderful values he has gained at his time at Beautiful Sun.
What can be a better testimonial than this one that in the three years our child was a student at BSMS he never once cried and said that he didn’t want to go to school!
In fact, during holidays he counted days to go back to school. It’s such a happy place!
Moving on was a very bittersweet moment for us. We were leaving a part of us behind yet taking a part of this wonderful institution with us."
